A medical doctor can train to be a physiotherapist; however, physios are not doctors. They are independent practitioners and can refer on to doctors, refer for scans or other such specialties if necessary. Physiotherapists are first contact practitioners and do not require a referral from a doctor. Like doctors, physiotherapists can diagnose an injury and follow it up with a treatment plan.
Does physiotherapy hurt?
Treatment should not hurt excessively. While some cases may require some heavier force to reproduce symptoms, a patient should never be in severe pain. If you are feeling discomfort, please inform your physiotherapist.
Can a physiotherapist help with neck pain?

What do I wear to a physio appointment?
Wear sportswear or gym kit that you can move in. For ladies, if the area of concern is your back, neck, or shoulders, please wear a sports bra as the physiotherapist will need to see your spine. For lower limb, hips, knees please wear shorts or cycling shorts so the physiotherapist can see the area clearly. Please also bring any relevant information that may include your doctor's referral, hospital discharge letters, medication list, reports for X-ray, ultrasound or MRI.
How long does a physiotherapy session last?
Typically, an appointment will last 30-60 minutes, depending on your condition. If you are required to attend further treatment, your physiotherapist will advise you on how long these sessions will last.
