What happens at an Ayurvedic massage session?
During an Ayurvedic massage, you will be asked to lie on a massage table while your therapist massages your body with warm herbal oils chosen for your specific needs. The first stage is called Garshana, which is a dry exfoliation to stimulate the lymphatic system and prepare your skin to absorb oils. Next, the Abhyanga is a full-body massage, using special friction strokes to improve circulation and relieve stiffness. This is followed by Vishesh, or slow, deep strokes that promote relaxation. Finally, your therapist will perform Marma and chakra balancing, using dosha-specific essential oils to stimulate energy points and balance your chakras. An important part of the holistic Ayurvedic system is diet, so your therapist may also discuss your diet and nutrition with you, and may make suggestions for change, if necessary.
Does Ayurvedic massage hurt?
No, Ayurvedic massage should not be painful though there may be some gentle pulling of the fingers and toes, and some of the massage strokes are strong. Your head will also be massaged, so for those with long hair, there might be a bit of gentle hair-pulling.
Is it safe to have an Ayurvedic massage while I am pregnant?
Ayurvedic massages can be safe during pregnancy, but always check with your doctor before starting. You may be advised not to have a massage until you have passed the first trimester of pregnancy, or if you are at risk for pre-term labour, have high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, a problem with the placenta, or gestational diabetes. As well as Ayurvedic massage being relaxing and helping to reduce stress, aches and pains, and sleep problems associated with pregnancy, natural Ayurvedic dietary treatments can also be beneficial, particularly in controlling morning sickness.
How long does an Ayurvedic massage session last?
A typical Ayurvedic massage session usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. Your first appointment will take slightly longer, as your therapist will take a medical background and discuss the reasons for your visit in detail (please bring a list of your current medications with you). Afterwards, you may rest quietly for up to 15 minutes to allow the oils to soak into your skin.
How often should I have an Ayurvedic massage?
For Ayurveda to be really effective, it is a long-term commitment. How often you need to have a massage will depend on your own personal needs, and your therapist can advise you. You may start out with several sessions over the course of a month and then find that balance can be achieved with regular weekly, bi-weekly or monthly massages.
What should I wear to an Ayurvedic massage appointment?
For an Ayurvedic massage, wear loose, comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting a little oily, as the treatment involves applying a significant quantity of oils. You will be asked to undress to your underwear, but if you're not comfortable removing that much clothing, please let your therapist know. Ayurvedic massage will often leave your hair looking a little ruffled, so you may not want to schedule any meetings directly afterwards.
