Shiatsu is a form of Japanese bodywork that involves applying pressure to specific points on the body using the thumbs, fingers, palms, and sometimes elbows or knees. The word ‘shiatsu’ literally means ‘finger pressure’ in Japanese. This technique is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) principles, particularly the concept of balancing the body's energy, or ‘Qi (pronounced ‘chi’), to promote health and well-being. It is performed through loose clothing and does not use oils.

Common conditions treated with Shiatsu massage include:

  • Back pain and other chronic pain
  • Headaches and migraine
  • Digestive issues
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome, constipation and bowel issues
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep quality
  • Depression and mood swings
  • Stress
  • People with diabetes and high blood pressure may also benefit from Shiatsu massage, because it reduces stress and promotes relaxation, both of which are known to reduce blood glucose levels and lower blood pressure.

Other recommended treatments may include:

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
  • Acupuncture
  • Craniosacral
  • Homeopathy
  • Osteopathy
