How safe is a pre-natal massage?
Massage by a qualified practitioner such as those at BeRehab is considered generally safe after the first trimester of pregnancy, but always check with your doctor first. If you are at risk for pre-term labour, gestational diabetes or pre-eclampsia, you may be advised to avoid massage until after you have given birth. If you are cleared by your doctor for pre-natal massage, it can be of great benefit.
Can I bring my baby with me to a postpartum massage?
Of course you are welcome to bring your newborn along with you, as you may feel more relaxed knowing you are there if your baby needs you. You can also bring your partner or another caregiver to hold the baby. Some clients may prefer to leave their baby at home with another caregiver while they have a massage, and that’s OK, too.
How soon after giving birth should I have a postpartum massage?
Postpartum massage can typically begin as soon as the mother feels comfortable, often within a few days to a few weeks after delivery. However, it’s important to consult with your doctor, especially if there were complications during delivery or if your baby was delivered by C-section.
Can postpartum massage help with breastfeeding issues?
Yes, postpartum massage can help with breastfeeding problems by reducing pain and tension in the shoulders and improving circulation. It helps increase milk production by stimulating the production of prolactin, a hormone that's important for lactation. Massage can also help reduce inflammation of breast tissue (mastitis).
