What happens at a Rolfing Massage session?
A typical Rolfing massage session usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. Your first appointment will take slightly longer, as your Rolfer will take a medical history and discuss the reasons for your visit in detail.
What should I wear to a Rolfing massage appointment?
Appropriate attire for a Rolfing session is underwear or cycle shorts and sports bra for women (or loose athletic shorts and a tank top, if you feel more comfortable), and gym or cycle shorts for men. You will be asked to move around during the session, and your therapist needs to be able to see how your body is moving.
Does a Rolfing massage hurt?
In the past, Rolfing had a reputation for being a painful form of massage, quite different from relaxation massage. Dr Rolf was known for applying very direct and deep pressure. She believed that this was necessary in order to “liquify” connective tissue and “melt” what is restricting it. However, over time, understanding has changed about how muscle and connective tissue work, and Rolfing practitioners now know that carefully administered pressure and manual elongation of the muscle with often send the signal to the nervous system to ‘let go’.
