IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation) as a physiotherapy tool

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM) is a manual therapy technique used by physiotherapists and healthcare professionals to release fascia, a connective tissue that surrounds the muscles, nerves, blood vessels and organs. It involves the use of specially designed instruments to apply controlled pressure and friction to targeted areas of the body, promoting the breakdown of adhesions, scar tissue and fascial restrictions. As part of a comprehensive treatment approach, IASTM can help individuals recover from injuries, improve athletic performance and enhance overall musculoskeletal health.

IASTM tools, typically made of stainless steel or other materials, have bevelled edges and various shapes that allow therapists to precisely target adhesions and scar tissue within the fascia. By applying controlled pressure and friction along the affected area, IASTM helps break down adhesions and scar tissue, restoring mobility and flexibility to the fascia.

The mechanical stimulation provided by IASTM promotes tissue healing and remodelling processes. As the instruments glide over the skin, they create microtrauma, triggering the body's natural inflammatory response and stimulating the production of collagen and elastin fibres. This, in turn, helps remodel and strengthen the fascia, improving its flexibility and resilience.

IASTM techniques promote increased blood flow and oxygenation to the targeted tissues. The application of pressure and friction helps vasodilate blood vessels, enhancing circulation to the area. Improved blood flow delivers essential nutrients and oxygen to the tissues, facilitating the healing process and reducing inflammation within the fascia.

Fascial restrictions and adhesions can limit joint mobility and impair functional movement patterns. By releasing fascial restrictions and restoring optimal tissue flexibility, IASTM helps improve range of motion, joint mobility, and overall functional capacity. Patients often experience immediate improvements in movement and reduced pain following IASTM treatment sessions.

IASTM can be an effective adjunctive therapy for addressing musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction associated with fascial restrictions. By releasing tension and restoring balance within the fascia, IASTM helps alleviate pain, improve tissue function, and enhance overall quality of movement.
